Also, call me shallow, but the cover of this book is freaking gorgeous.

So, why did I pick up this book and stick with it till the end? After Gone with the Wind, I was craving another epic story and it’s been a while since I’ve read a good fantasy novel. I had very high hopes for this book which should have been a red flag–high hopes never end well. This behemoth of a novel was EIGHT-HUNDRED PAGES LONG and could have been much shorter. Oh, there’s also this side plot where Igrain Crest tries to snag the throne away from Sabran. Ead has been chosen to be the Prioress and Sabran has a queendom to rule. In the end, Tané is restored as dragon rider, Ead and Sabran agree to meet in ten years. (She bought Eat a fruit from the tree at some point to heal her.) Sabran seeks an alliance with the other leaders and together, they defeat the Nameless One. Tané returns to Inys and plans how to destroy the Nameless One with Ead. He and Tané set Nayimathun free and tells them about the jewels. Ead is hunted down by the Sisters of the Priory and eventually poisoned so Loth travels to the East to seek an alliance against the Nameless One. They escape from the Priory and return to Inys. She finds Loth there, thought to be dead as he was sent away. Ead is exiled from court and escapes to the Priory. Tané is exiled to Feather Island to a life of studying. Tané becomes a dragon rider and is chosen by a dragon named Nayimathun who is later captured by pirates when Niclays tries to blackmail Tané. She breaks a rule by letting a stranger in and hiding him with Niclays Roos via her best friend Susa. In the East(?), Tané is working to become a dragon rider.

Ead later learns the dragon is Kalyba, a witch who she later learns is the founding member of Sabran’s lineage. Later, a dragon attacks and Sabran miscarries. Sabran marries Aubrecht and becomes pregnant. Inys’ religion is based around the idea that as long as there are heirs to the throne, the Nameless One won’t rise. Sabran is the descendant of the warrior who supposedly killed the dragon but the Priory has the true account–Cleolind killed the Nameless One. She’s been there for eight years as part of the Priory of the Orange Tree, a secret organisation(?) of mages to kill dragons. And Tané wants to be a dragon rider!Įad is a servant at Sabran’s court, Queen of Inys. Ead must protect her with forbidden magic.
